Lake Minnetonka was a well-known tourist destination in the late 19th century and an important place to Native Americans long before that. Historian and author Paul Maravelas will explore the history of the area before and after white settlement, including the lake’s sacred site, sugar camp, and “fort.” He’ll also examine how the Dakota were featured as a tourist attraction during Minnetonka’s tourist heyday and how they continued to use the lake until its wild rice vanished about 1900.
