Sketch a drawing on a blank postcard and then compose a note to a friend on the back at this free program. Postcard stamps will be provided. Learn about the history of pencils, what they were first made of, and why they are yellow.

Create your own mini log cabin using dowel “logs” and a cardboard box! Learn about frontier construction and hear stories about the Pond brothers’ first log cabin at Bde Maka Ska (formerly Lake Calhoun).

Bloomington Parks and Recreation sponsors events and activities for all ages throughout the year at the Pond-Dakota Mission Park. Learn more about the park. The centerpiece of the park is the historic Gideon and Agnes Pond house, built in 1856. Learn more about the house.

Attend Annual Events

John Philips Sousa Memorial Band Concert and Ice Cream Social

Enjoy a toe-tapping outdoor concert on the south lawn of the Gideon and Agnes Pond House. Directed by Mr. Scott Crosbie, the Sousa Band has been entertaining local audiences for forty years. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Dakota Language Camp

Learn the Dakota language through Dakota games, crafts, songs, dancing, foods and nature walks through the beautiful trails at Pond-Dakota Mission Park. Students grades K-6 and their families are welcome.  For more information, download the brochure.

River Rendezvous Public Event

Get a taste of the mid-19th century lives of Native Americans, fur traders and settlers at this living history event. Meet re-enactors demonstrating different lifestyles, historical crafts, and occupations, such as hand-dipped candle making, tin smithing, farming, and more. Tour the restored 1856 Gideon and Agnes Pond House. Learn more at the City of Bloomington website.

Hands-on activities for all ages are held one Sunday afternoon per month (typically the first Sunday), including:

  • Bread baking
  • Candle dipping
  • Maple Sugaring
  • Corn husk doll making
  • Dakota language lessons and games
  • Prairie walks
  • Flintknapping
  • Horn carving
  • Mini tipi construction
